After the Aleutian campaign 111 Squadron was assigned to the European theater and redesignated 440 because the RAF already had a 111 squadron. The RAF base in Hurn England was the second station for the RCAF 440 in Europe. After a stay first at Ayr, Scotland flying Hawker Hurricanes the Squadron moved to Hurn where they turned in their Hurricanes for Typhoons. Many Typhoon missions were staged from Hurn and various RCAF,RAF and USAAF squadrons were stationed here.On March 30, 1944 W/C Davidson led the 440's first European mission on an anti-shipping sweep over the channel Islands that originated from Hurn. This excellant scenery was created by our own Gunner. |
